File a Tax Extension in 3 Easy Steps

It's easy to extend your IRS income tax deadline to October 15 for individuals & families, and September 15 for businesses.

Step 1: Provide the personal or business data the IRS requires for you to file a tax extension. This includes your personal or business name, address, social security number (Tax-ID or EIN for business). Other tax forms are not required to file for a tax extension, such as W-2’s, 1099s, and prior year tax returns. All of your information is kept secure and not shared with anyone but the IRS.

Step 2: Estimate if you are going to get a tax refund, or expect to owe a tax balance. For individuals, you will have access to a simple calculator that will help you estimate your tax situation. For businesses, it’s common to take this year’s profit multiplied by last year’s tax rate to estimate your tax situation. If you expect to owe, and want to make a tax payment to avoid potential IRS interest and late payment penalties, that payment can be sent via check or electronically to the IRS via Electronic Funds Withdrawal from your bank (EFT) – it’s your choice.

Step 3: Once you submit your tax extension application, it will be sent directly to the IRS for approval. The transmission to the IRS is secure, and your data is protected at all times.

You're done! In a couple of days, you will receive an email notifying you that your extension was approved by the IRS. If for any reason your tax extension is rejected, the email will explain any errors and you will be able to resubmit at no additional charge after making any changes. Almost all rejections are caused by a name and social security number not matching IRS records (caused by misspellings, typos, change of name, etc). As long as you submit your information accurately and on time, it should be approved.
